Orthoptist/Orthoptics

WHAT IS A CERTIFIED ORTHOPTIST?

A certified orthoptist is a special healthcare worker who helps manage eye movement problems in kids and adults.

WHAT IS THE TRAINING OF AN ORTHOPTIST?

Orthoptists go to college first. Then they study for 2 more years in a special program. They must pass tests to show that they can do their job well. These tests are given by the American Orthoptic Council (AOC). They also must keep learning after they start working and show this to the AOC.

WHERE DO ORTHOPTISTs WORK?

Orthoptists work with eye doctors for kids (pediatric ophthalmologists) and eye doctors for people with brain issues (neuro ophthalmologists). They often help teach students who want to be eye doctors or orthoptists. Some orthoptists also do research on eye care.

WHAT DO ORTHOPTISTS DO?

Orthoptists check how well people can see, focus their eyes, and move their eyes together. They can suggest treatments like eye patching, eye exercises and glasses to help the eyes move better and see better.

DO ORTHOPTISTS WORK ALONE?

No, orthoptists work with eye doctors (ophthalmologists) but the ophthalmologist may not see the patient every time.
