David Friendly, MD (1932-1993)
Dr. Friendly served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Children's National Medical Center from 1977 to 1993 and as professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics at the George Washington University. Dr. Friendly was a founding member and later the fifth president of AAPOS and was a member of many professional organizations including the National Children's Eye Care Foundation, of which he also was its First Vice President, the American Ophthalmology Society, AAO, and the American Association for Research in Strabismus. He participated in the publication of over 40 scientific articles, four book chapters and one thesis. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Carleton College and received the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society Award from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, a senior honor award from the AAO and a senior honor award from AAPOS. He played a major role in organizing both AAPOS and CEF.
